Was in one of those "Factory shops" today, and they had black currants and raspberries (malling promise) canes for 50p, a bit of haggling and I got 2 blackcurrants and 4 raspberries for a quid, but have I simply lost a quid?

I know its getting late and they are all single canes, but what should I do with them next? plant up in a pot? because I do have some very large ones and it would be ost practical. Or just leave them be until the autumn? There's absolutely no sign of life in them

    Many thanks!

    Hi

How long have they been sitting around ?? scratch the bark and see if you can see any green if so maybe a slight chance , plus give them a good soak in a bucket of water you never know they may surprise you, I was in B&Q yesterday they are selling all the summer bulbs off cheap most were dead as a Dodo when I had a quick look at the packets.

Yeah I was thinking the same spruce, they were just as you walked in, so slightly shaded in their box, but would have have been kept warm enough I imagine! Ill tr just that and see what the story is, otherwise Ive spent a quid buying 6 sticks and some soil!

Raspberries won't fruit this year - Malling Promise is a summer fruiting variety, so will create new "sucker" canes this year which will bear fruit next year, so as long as you encourage suckers this year you will have fruit next year. My other concern is that I don't think that 4 canes is enough. You need enough plants that you can "harvest" a meal, rather than a mouthful. I don't know what other folk would suggest, but we have 10 canes (or each variety, with several varieties from Early to Late to extend the season) so that we can pick a decent sized bowl of fruit for pudding :)

Yeah I knew that buying them Kristen but thought for the price theyd be worth it, however I done as spruce said and scratched the side but found no green, so Ill presume them to be dead

If you have the space then no harm in planting them - I'm thinking that they might sucker from the roots. Or you could take them back, if that's possible?

I saw some Blueberries, Raspberries and Blackcurrants in 3" pots reduced to 20p each outside a QD Store today, that although not tip-top, were in leaf and with a bit of TLC and potting up before planting out would have been viable plants, so there are some bargains out there.
