    Hi Everyone

As some of you will know I do all my work on our laptop which I sit at downstairs while the main desktop PC is upstairs in Mr K's den as he likes to call it.

Now my question is for some help please with transferring my stored emails that I have on files on my laptop up to the spare portable hard drive which is upstairs.I have loads of those jokes that come in from family and friends plus I have some photo's that friends and family have sent to me as attachments and they are stored on files but now and again the machine wants to compact this files to save on disc space but I thought that if I could transfere them onto the hard drive it would give me more room.

I have had the laptop for almost two years and have so such stuff on it,I actually started to delete some of the emails that I keep getting from companys like Boots and Lakeland etc so they have now gone.

Mr K has managed to put some of my photo's from the laptop onto the hard drive but isn't too sure how to do the email files

If any of you computers buffs out there could tell me if this is possible to do and a step by step talk through of it I and Mr K will be most greatful.

    Many Thanks:)

Do you have a pen drive Kandy?

Because if you do you export to "portable device", otherwise if you have an ipod that will do it do.

Just plug them into a USB port and the wizard should talk you through it.

Then you plug the device into the laptop upstairs and the wizard in that one will talk you through that.

Me and mine have the same layout here too and that is what I do.

Hi Lolli, sorry to seem thick but is a pen drive one of those stick thingys that you put in a slot at the side of the laptop?Sorry I am blonde so it makes things difficult for me to understand.:o:D

Mr K has an ipod Nano,if that is any help.:)

I will have to show Mr K your post when he gets in from work and see if he can do it from what you have written. What I am trying to do is transfere these files onto an external hardrive{portable one} not exactly onto the Desktop PC up there.I think I might be confusing everyone in what I am trying to say:oops::p

Kandy, what are trying to achieve? Get a bit more disk space or backup your emails so you can get to them again in the future?

If you want more disk space then just deleting emails won't make much difference (unless they have big attachments like pictures). If you are using Outlook and you delete them, remember that they don't actually disappear from your disk unless you go into the 'Deleted Items' folder and delete them again!

If you want to backup your emails so you can get at them again in the future (and thats a very good thing to do) then it depends on how your emails are stored. If, like me, you use Outlook, then all my emails/calendar/contacts are stored in one big file called a Personal STorage file (mine is called outlook.pst). Thats the file you have to copy onto the external hard drive. Heres a link on how to find it: http://ask - leo.com/where_is_my_outlook_pst_file_located.html

:thumb: Transfer all the things you want to keep to a USB memory stick, plugged into your PC... Then safely remove it & take it up stairs & transfer to the hard drive up stairs... Easy peasy Kandy.. Mr K will be able to do that as I expect he uses memory sticks at work...

Hi John and Marely, what I basically want to do is as Marley says to transfere the emails from the laptop onto the hard drive so that if anything was to happen to the laptop then all the files with the photo's on from Family and Friends of their Grand Children holiday photo's etc won't be lost and will be safe on the hardrive.

Mr K I am sure does use those memory sticks at work so I will ask him to buy some next time we are in town and he can do them so they are at least safe in storage on the hard drive.People are always saying we should back up our files,it's just that Mr K apart from transferring the photo's has never done any emails.:p

Thanks for all your help everyone.Kandy:thmb:

Kandy, it would indeed be a disaster to lose photos or any other treasured information from your computer. A few quid spent on some memory sticks would be well worth it - hard drives can fail at anytime, so you're definately doing the right thing.

:thmb: Kandy with the memory sticks, you have a double whammy, once on the stick, you can copy all your emails pics etc from the stick to the hard drive upstairs & then as a double back up you have them on the hard drive & the memory stick.... Just label it..!!!!!:thmb:

:thmb: BTW, I even burn a few cds with my very special pics on.. You know, like all my grand children & all my old scanned in photos..... Can never have too many options for those very rare moment or special pics & things....:gnthb: Believe me...:)

Kandy don't transfer them to your hard drive this can pack up as it did with me a couple of months ago fortunately I use a remote back up system called Mozy and was able to recover all my files, you are allowed to store 2gb free it works automatically each day and backs up all your data,

Yes, was going to say that - memory sticks can fail as well as cds can get corrupted. Nothing's forever these days.
