I am a complete beginner to gardening and looking for some recommendations.
I am looking for a fast growing tree that I can place in pots to go around my lawn.

Preferably It should grow no taller than 2 metres and have a reasonable spread and possible it should be something than I could possibly start from seed in the right size pot.

Hope I am not asking for too much here.

Not sure starting from seed is the way to go for trees, I have in pots, an olive, clematis, cherry, rhododendrens, and a dwarf magnolia, if the pot is big enough the list is endless, all bought as bare rooted.
You could go for conifers all year round cover, or roses, it depends if you want "interest" all year, or don`t mind leaf cover loss, get specific varieties that will attain the height you want.

Why do you want to grow them in pots? Why not grow them in the ground?

      Hi Adegard,

      :sign0016:

      Welcome to the forum :)

We have Acers, Salix ( Willow ), Syringa (Lilac ) all growing in containers.

As Pam said it depends what sort of look you're aiming for but my preference would be the Acers, there are so many different types out there and at this time of year you can get one in full leaf, so you can see the different colours and leaf shapes around 4'/5' high for just over £10, or a green one for around £8.

Disclaimer...... Prices depending on where you live of course :)

This sounds like just what I am looking for. Anything that add a bit of colour is a bonus for me. I shall start searching online.

one would think that a fast growing tree would have equal fast growing roots.

I live near the coast and on a crossroad, it blows like a banshee up the side of my bungalow and on through the garden, planning to move my passion flower, in a pot, as I think that`s suffering, I have an Acer in a pot tucked up behind the greenhouse.

I would go for Acer's as well, there are so many to choose from, most are not fast growing but some are and will provide interest throughout the growing season :)
