    Anyone bought tyres recently?
Came out on Christmas Eve, big screw sticking out rear tyre.

I was getting a warning that tyre pressures were not right the night before.
Went straight down to get a new tyre, it was pretty close to needing replacing anyway.

When I got there they said they could do it for me, but they didn't have my usual make but one similar, they then came back and said another one was low on tread but still legal. They could replace both and put them together on the front.

As I was looking a replacing both soon, I agreed.

    It was fairly expensive.

I looked up the price online when I got home from the same place, it was £124 cheaper.

I sent an e mail to them, they invited feedback on the paperwork.

To cut a long story short I got £60 back eventually without much effort.

Wont say who it was, but they were Quick.

I know from recent experience, it's always best to ask.

Afraid its common practice these days even if you phone up their branch for the price you will find them cheaper on their web site, so you just book in from the website, though that can be a problem as its often a few days later before they have an opening.

When you just call in like that they really do quote you top dollar, knowing most folk will just accept it, at least you complained and got something back.

Also good that you renewed as an axle pair, though they say you can mix makers if they are both radials , its still a lot better to have the same make.

Thing is they then went on to my brakes, now I know my front pads are low, another job I need to get done soon, but god knows how much they would have cost had I said ok.

The price changed dramatically online after I complained, on the day I had the job done it was £124 cheaper, by the day after Boxing day it was only £60 cheaper .

I've tried it a couple of times since and it is now stable, although other bits and pieces seem to be still changing pricewise.

              Lesson #1 - Don't go to Kwik-Fit (also known as Quick Sh*t & Quick Fit-Up)

Lesson #2 - Have a quick check of online prices before you go. If you can wait a couple of days, book your slot online and then go to your chosen outlet. Take a special look at sites like BlackCircles, eTyres and Event Mobile Tyres as often they will come to you to do the fitting and still be cheaper than the usual tyre chain places.

              Lesson #3 - Don't go to Kwik-Fit

Thats another job they really put the pressure on you to have done immediately , so do shop around and get several free inspections and quotes.
Likely some will also say you need new discs as well, though they may give high prices they should not be that expensive. *

Don't forget the brake fluid, typically * it needs changing every 2 years.

                * Out of interest what is the car, as prices for some can be high anyway.

Just glad I'm able to do 99% of my own servicing :)

Where I work we have a local garage working from the unit on the back of ours, so I will get the brakes done there, he is reasonable.
With the tyres I was going to wait a month or so and get Christmas out the way, both were still legal. It was only the fact of the puncture that made it a bit more pressing, and being Christmas Eve etc.
Up till now I've had the car serviced every year by the main dealer, but now its 5 yrs old I dont think they want to know me anymore, so will get the servicing done by the mate out back in future.

If you went to CrapFit tough sh#t!

If they were sixty quid a tyre cheaper there was clearly an issue with the website configuration. I would struggle to get sixty quid off of a premium brand £250 tyre with my trade discount.

                    PS - Kwik Fit

The reason for my 'downer' on them is of personal experience.

Many years ago, I was daft enough to take my car there for tyres - Ford Sierra Sapphire, so that will give you an idea of the era we are talking about. Anyway, as it already had brand new discs and pads, I got the 'your shocks are about to go pal' routine - - you know, the one where 'we shouldn't even let you drive away with them this bad, they could fail at any minute and kill half the universe'...... anyway, I was young and hadn't learned yet.

Long story short, I was persuaded into shocks and springs all round. The back wasn't too bad, but when they came to the fronts, the guy was using a spring compressor to assemble the strut when one side of the spring compressor let go. Rather than stop, as his workshop mate suggested he do, the 'mechanic' decided to crack on....... even I knew that was a bad idea. Anyway, the spring compressor slipped off the spring, and as you would expect the spring took off in an upward direction at one hell of a rate of knots; it blew through a ceiling tile on a suspended ceiling, bashed another out on its way down and landed on a car two bays up from mine damaging the bonnet.

They completed the job for me after the commotion settled, and I left with a Sierra on stilts. From that day on, I vowed only to use them for dire emergencies.

Nice motor @pete - got a bit of push when you need it, and yet still practical too.

If you can, try and find a good independent and stick with them - even under warranty, they can service your car as long as they are using genuine Ford parts and stamping the book. A good independent garage is gold.

I got, (yet to be received), 30 quid off each, I've looked it up on another site and it come out around the same price, after the reduction, not sure how I came up with the first online price on Christmas Eve which was 60 quid per tyre cheaper.
I did point out their pricing was pretty random.

Never have a problem with Kwik-fit, but I always do my research first, checking prices with National, ATS etc., and a couple of independents. Quote the local Kwik-fit the lowest price and they'll beat it.

On the subject of defective tyres. A few months ago I thought I had a problem with my gearbox, as there was a bit of a whine sometimes at certain speeds. I then had a puncture and found a big screw in the tread of the offending tyre, the head was well worn so it had been there for some time without the tyre losing much pressure. The tyre was too far gone to be repaired, so I had a new tyre. it was the noise of the screw on the road surface that must have caused the whine, as it's completely disappeared now.
