I have an apple tree that has produced an abundance of tiny apples and was wondering why this has happened. (about an inch in size)

Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

Is it a crab apple? If so it sounds OK, otherwise, is it a new tree, probably lack of water. If it's an old apple tree, then I don't know.

If its an old tree, I've just been told by a gardener I had working at my house that if you pull off the smaller apples early in the season and throughout then the other should be bigger and better. No tried it myself this year as its too late but might give it a go next.
