I have a Viburnum opulus which has been growing out from underneath a laurel tree. I have now cut back the laurel and as you can see from the photo the main growth of the shrub is several feet horizontally from the base. The vertical shoots do have new buds on them so do you think it would be safe to prune it right back to the base now (September)?
I appreciate I may not get many flowers next year but this is holding up the renovation of the area.
    Thanks

Can't see any problem with pruning it hard now.
It's a native plant and therefore quite tough. It will simply grow with renewed vigour next spring.

I would prune it hard now ,it should not make to much growth now before winter sets in ,and should get away well in the spring ..
