Caught these little montsers in the one large pot of begonias I never stored away properley for winter (just kept in the same compost) I kept in the greenhouse frost free, so glad I checked the pot today. They have had a good nible but should be ok as the corms are huge . Amazed how many in one pot. That will teach me !!! DSCF1460.JPG ... a pied wagtail, 2 x Robin, and a blackbird had lunch !!! :ccheers::evil:

The birds will be back again tomorrow for their lunch :)

We have much too many pots to search them all for the dreaded VW so we have to water VW killer into them through the season. I'm never sure it gets all of them but it must keep the numbers down.

Are you sure you got them all @Spruce .
I lost begonias years ago due to them, they actually tunnel inside the corms.

That’s exactly what they do. Corms need to be completely cleaned, all soil removed and then inspected. :)

I'd give the corms a 24hr soak in a vine weevil killer.

I have very little damage now from vine weevils since I changed from mpc to John innes compost. Controlling the adults in summer has helped too.:)
                Hope I haven’t tempted fate now:noidea:

Vine weevils in fact most if not all of the weevil species always fascinated me from an entomological aspect due to their design.

That was until I once began to lose my fuchsia stock. Not only did I take a much 'deeper' interest in the grubs but also the adults. They can at times be difficult to see when on the soil/compost in much the dame way as the dreaded lily beetle when it lands upside down on the compost. Since those days. I make it a habit to check under the rims of pots and also to frequently move pots, trays etc around the GH.

The pressure sprayer is great for dowsing the underside of all staging etc. Be amazed at the various 'hangers-on' that make an appearance.

                    Morning Mike :)
Yes, always sensible to check under and around pots regularly......small slugs, for example, always seem to appear at this time of year. Esp under pots of rooted cuttings.:)

Begonia tubers do seem to be susceptible to Vine Weevils . Petes 24hr soak is a great idea.
Two years back I had them hatching in the house on my trailing begonia tubers. Luckily they don't move very fast so are easy to catch . And even more luckily Mrs H did not spot them , otherwise I'd be in real bother
Here is the little beauty, if you don't know how to ID them.

Yep, begonias, primroses, fuchsias, heucheras etc are attractive to vine weevils ....however, knowing this makes it easier to control them....I just treat these. :)For example, the adults like euonymus as hosts so a night time visit and torch reveals them for me to zap.
