Wasabi diversification European first for Watercress Company

The Watercress Company has diversified into growing wasabi, saying it is the first European commercial grower of the rhizomes, usually used in paste form in Japanese cuisine. Managing director Tom Amery said: "Wasabi is a very different type of product to watercress but it too is brimming with compounds and is already known to have medicinal benefits." He continued: "We are looking for products that we can take on which require expertise and investment to produce. That has now come together with the Wasabi Company, as we hope it will with other ventures next year." Meanwhile further evidence has emerged of the cancer-fighting properties of watercress and other brassicas. A study reported in the current Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that a compound contained in the vegetables inhibited the spread of breast cancer in mice.
