Having been stung 22 times tonight after disturbing a wasp nest (Underground) tonight on my plot I am keen to destroy it at dawn, should I cover the hole or smoke them out? I am not keen to get stung again.

Being a total coward, I got a man in to deal with mine. Of course, you can get the fly and wasp killer from the supermarket and spray it into the hole but personally I'd sooner stay indoors and get the local pest man in.

I agree with Palustris, Wasp Nest Destroyer, used from 6ft early morning or late evening. Target the entrance.:gnthb:

I would just call in the professionals.
Around here they do it for about £25.
Much better than 22 stings !

Spend the £25 quid Collin and save yourself the double agony.
Do you fancy another 22 stings. Might be 60 - or 100 - or 500 the next time.
    Let the professionals do it.

Alice, if you have doubts about treating wasp nests, you can get something called Rapid which will kill any insect within 20ft of you. Thus giving you the time to treat the wasps.:gnthb:

The foam from 6' works a treat. I've done two nests in our garden and one in a neighbour's shed and had no stings at all. All you need is to deliver is a quick blast of foam to cover the entrance and then beat a retreat. Your £5 can should last you a year or so.

If you have good access to the nest hole go for a DIY approach when the little [*******] are sleeping. If you do not have direct access get a man in as the foam will be ineffective. I paid a man to do my loft, long pole, white powder, pumpy pump pump, wasps go mental, wasps die ! easy peasy :D watch out for the soldier or guard wasps, those big fellas will hurt you proper ! As a word of warning some underground nests on 'plots' or generally uninterrupted ground can be unsuspectingly huge ! If your foam runs out before the nest is treated, RUN !:hehe:
