BBC News - in my humble opinion, Princess Anne is absolutely right in 'throwing her opinion out there' as this is a subject that clearly needs more debate.

Many people were not bothered that they had been eating horse meat in the recent scandal - the were bothered that they had been doing so unknowingly. Apparently, we are one of very few countries that doesn't consume horse meat, and that is probably borne out of them being almost like pets to us.

However, there are other animals which are like pets that we do consume - rabbit being one that springs to mind. I don't eat rabbit, as the smell of them cooking for the dogs years ago put me off, and in fairness they are a bit on the cute and cuddly side to make eating them seem reasonable to me - but I have the [i[choice[/i], and I believe that is the key. Not everyone will agree with eating horse meat, and not everyone would eat it even if it were to become available, but that should surely be down to choice?

I have ordered and eaten horse meat, in a red wine sauce if I recall correctly. Delicious.

I regularly eat rabbit and, as far as I am concerned, horse meat is perfectly acceptable. I have no idea what the big fuss is about. Lambs are cute and cuddly and I eat them.

Personally I don't think it would work.

        I keep tropical fish.
Have often been into a fish shop where there are sick, diseased and dying fish. Clearly the owner doesn't care about the welfare of the fish, enough to do anything about it. And one would think that he would do something because he clearly can't sell a dead fish, and that would be a loss of income. But that doesn't seem to worry this either.

If there is going to be cruelty to animals, it is going to happen.

I sort of get where you are coming from Sirius, and cannot argue with the sad truth that cruelty will always be around in one form or other no matter what we do.

However, there are considerably more checks and balances in place for animals in the food supply chain than there are for pets. Part of the problem with horses as well is that once they reach the point where they are no longer fit to be ridden or worked, they are often seriously neglected simply because they are not a pet - a horse can live for many years in retirement, and to look after one properly is an expensive business.

Yes well done to her! I'm all for drawing attention to horse welfare and let's face it many people have been eating horse for years, they just didn't know they were. I haven't eaten meat for over 2o years and don't miss it.

If you are paying for good beef it should be beef, it shouldn't be anything less, if you buy beef+horse then that what it should be, if you buy beef+rat then that's what it should be
If you buy a Rolls Royce you should get a Rolls not a Mini :snork:

You should get what it says on the tin/packet and priced to suit what it is, two many things are priced for the best, but they put cheaper bits in, GREED

It occurs to me that our ancestors never had this problem. Either they knew exactly what they were eating because they had produced it or knew who had or they were just glad to be getting meat, be it known or otherwise.

:yay: Yay well spoken that Lady.!!

Yes you should of course get what you are paying for.. Hence I go to the local butcher as much as possible... Personally I think that if you are a meat eater then what is the problem whether horse cow pig fowl sheep game vermin or whatever kind.. The only reason there should be a problem eating any of it is because you don't have it or of flavour/texture dislike or religion... Not because of what it is... It is true if you look around you & at the rest of the world we are very conservative in our tastes..

We are all far too spoilt these days with food.. The amount of waste shows that.. Jeesh so many people live on ready meals & don't know how to cook, it is frightening... Therefore it has helped this to happen I think, but that is my thoughts anyway..

Wish I could afford horse meat. It's infinitely more tender than horrible, underhung French beef. Still trying to work out the logic of lasagnes supposedly being adulterated with horsemeat when it's more expensive than beef anyway.

I think that what Princess Anne is saying is, it`s a food option, better than them starving in fields as was on tonights news in Wales.
Not selling it and calling it something else as we had previously.
