I am just reading about the serious potential water shortage in the future and should I reluctantly think about getting rid of my beloved garden pond as it needs topping up a few times a year.
I do have a system whereby I can direct rainwater to the pond but if there is no rain.......no water.

On the upside wildlife conservationists are desperate that more gardens should be built as natural ponds are on the decline as is wildlife.

So pondlovers can we look for some government help here ie.tax rebates and compensation :bigthumb::th scifD36:;)

Like everything else these days, mixed messages.
I'll still top up my pond in the summer, I pay through the nose to do so, so dont feel guilty.

Why are they now saying it is going to get dryer?
A couple of years ago they said warmer air holds more water so it will get wetter.

      Doubt you will get a tax rebate:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

As a side issue, did you know the water companies charge you for disposal of water you use to top up your pond and water your garden.
They do around here, I think it should be illegal to charge to dispose of something that is basically evaporating, but that is the agreement that Offwat thinks is fair.
Bunch of rip off merchants the lot of them.

Just finishing off two new ponds on what was going to be a petanque pitch, but then someone gave me some Lotus rhizomes..... They're not designed to be wildlife ponds....there's already one swarming with frogs, toads and newts.....but tell that to the teenage frog and the newt that have moved in already! At a pinch, the ponds are topped up from the farm reservoir but it's a guarantee of an invasion of disgusting algae

Yes, @pete we get charged for water in and every drop gets charged again for "sewage". I'm surprised they don't cnarge extra to make it colder in winter and more temperate in summer

I'm one of the culprits, as far as water goes.
With my koi pool, apart from the filtration, UV and air pump, I trickle change the 3000 gallon contents, 24/7, as do a high proportion of those of us with koi pools.
I pay £810 a year for water and sewerage to a company who won't pay enough towards fixing the leaks. That's why they reduce the pressure at night, so it's hard to get a shower after midnight as it's not enough to get my leccy shower to work.
More than enough rain falls in this country. If United Utilities put fixing leaks and providing sufficient capacity before profits, (four hundred and thirty-two million pounds last year) then there wouldn't be a problem.

I wouldnt worry about it. England and Wales looses 3.1 BILLION gallons per day due to leaks. I dont .
