Last month I added a new flowerbed to our garden by digging it up completely, adding manure and top soil, then planting the following:
    Foxgloves
    Oxeye daisy
    Buckled fern
    Escallonia
    Astilbe
    Common sorrel
Today looking at the plants, I noticed quite a few of these new seedlings appearing round the majority of the plants. Are they likely to be weeds and therefore need to be removed?
If they are weeds, can’t understand where they’ve come from as removed all the turf and put added fresh soil
Can someone also recommend a good slug/caterpillar deterrent that is safe to rabbits as noticed a few leaves have been eaten

Hi and Welcome to the Forum,

When you turn over soil like that you natuarally bring dormant seeds of weeds to the surface and then they will readily germinate like that.
Adding manure and top soil can also bring in a load of seeds.

As that example only has its intial 'seeding' leaves its not possible to say what it is, more than likey a weed though.

If they are not seeds you have sown, best to take them out, so the goodness is there for the plants you want.

For slug and bug control with pets around you need to go organic, things like Garlic or Soap sprays, slug pubs, Copper Tapes etc.

Are you sure the culprit is not the Rabbit ?

Nematodes are also available to deal with slugs.
Slug pub + rabbits = drunken rabbits.

Thanks all for your replies. We haven’t planted any seeds so guessing they’re weeds and I’ll remove them this weekend.
Will look into your slug suggestions. It’s not the rabbits as the flowerbed is fenced off and they can’t get in
