So cold out there, especially in the wind. So I dashed down the garden and cut down a phlox. We have no green waste collection again this year as they are still on strike (aka won't work). But the council are about to give us two more bins for other recycling, so why can't they do green waste, which we pay extra for? I have lots more to cut down, but have to think of ways of getting rid of it. What a pain.

@cactus_girl, apparently the RHS is recommending that gardeners should 'chop and drop' i.e. cut up your perennials/weeds (some!) into small pieces and use that as a mulch on your flower beds to aid water preservation - not that we need it at present!

Not sure I like that idea, especially in the front garden but might give it a go.

I'm amazed that strike is still continuing, you have my sympathy.

Too wet and cold to do any gardening here today too. But, in the fading light at 5.00pm, I saw a blackbird searching for worms for the first time since December, so that improved the day :).

It's been a lovely sunny day. I've spent 4 hours in the garden with a break for lunch. Four more of my roses are planted along the donkey paddock fence, but that area isn't as wet as the rest. I weeded the orchard fence bed, which was a lot wetter but needs must. I pruned rose Blush Noisette, which is growing up an obelisk.

My flowerbeds would all become compost heaps as we have so much. We also get leaves from the golf course, but I do return those. I have a pampas grass that is bashed to bits and needs a good chop. I would love to set fire to it as Shiney once suggested , but the fence and neighbour's hedge might suffer. Shhh... my phlox went in the general waste tonight .

We still put garden waste in our normal waste bin, but don't make it too heavy.

It's been dry today but didn't do anything outside, just watching the seedlings grow.

A last a dry bright day. I persuaded my wife that the shopping could wait another day, and we spent about 3hrs in the garden. I pruned a Rowan and a viburnum, I know on the latter we will loose some flower but we needed to see without the leaves as there were lots of crossed branches. Haven't done them all as that would have been too drastic in one go. Lots of other cutting back. So good to get out there at last.

Agree with you there @Allotment Boy. I've had a good day as well, finished clearing away all the junk - might have to send OH with a big load to the tip soon!

I also starting cutting back some of hedge to expose the dwarf wall underneath. Neither of the tradesman have turned up yet to quote for the job.

Been busy again this week in the garden . I've had to rebuild a dry stone wall in the back garden , I built the wall before I dug out and flagged the area so they were a good gap of soil 8-10inch exposed to the elements at the bottom, the frost had started to blow it out which ultimately the wall would of failed.

that's where I've got up to as of yesterday I've ran out of decent stone but for the coping stone for the top so that on hold until I can scrounge more stone.

Today didn't feel like going to work its raining snowing then sleet, got bored and ventured out into the garden in weather :rolleyespink: thought I'd start filling the new border with soil I've been saving. Three barrow loads in noticed this big white thing forgot about the old fence posts :doh:two come out rather easy considering how difficult they can be but the third one :mad::mad: :wallbanging::gaah: evil took ages and were enormous big enough for a 6-8ft post not a little 2 half foot post weigh a ton. Also removed the large sambucas black lace and replanted on the garage site and sadly rose Paul scarlet has come a victim of not having a fence anymore so I'll think what to do with that or give it away.

Going out into the garden seems rather punishing at the moment everything requires back breaking work .

Took advantage of the drying windy weather and pruned the roses and the gooseberry bush. I hate pruning roses  I've been savaged by the pair of Harlow Cars!

Actually done a bit of weeding this morning to catch the bitter cress before it seeds. Also started moving and downsizing my raspberry bed. Much as I love raspberries and jam, you CAN have too much of a good thing. And I'm fed up that when I give people jam etc, I never get the jars back (except one person who then cheekily asked for another jar of marmalade, with no thought of how much time and cost is involved).

It's really wet & cold and it's a work day (it's a slow day actually but leaving my computer completely to go outside and do gardening would feel wrong).

So no actual gardening for me, but before work I had an idea for a small garden tweak that would enable me to keep a rose I was (reluctantly) planning to rehome :)

@Jess91 Harlow Carrs really are very thorny! I have their cousin, "The Country Parson" (nearly the same rose, except for the different colour of blooms) and I know what you mean.

(That's not the one I was going to rehome though, it's one of my two Lady of Shalott).
