I have a section of fence painted in Cuprinol Shades paint, in a pale green colour, and want to paint over this in a dark oak colour, my question to all you knowledgable gardeners is should I use the same paint in the darker colour, ( expensive) or could I use any cheaper dark coloured fence paint to go over it?

Bit of tricky question, unless you have tried it, you're probably going to need something with a fair amount of pigment in it, and if possible I'd try to use the same stuff as is already on there.

Was the original water based or oil based.

If you use a "paint" as such, its more likely to cover than a "stain".

Once it's been painted it's unlikely that a traditional stain will succeed because stains need to soak into the timber.
So I'd guess a darker (or brown) garden paint would be the best choice.
I've used 'no nonsense' garden paint from screwfix and it's excellent. Not sure if they do a brown. I know they do charcoal. Cream. Various shades of green etc. You can see I've used 3 shades of it in the picture.

Thank you Pete and JR:) I did think it may be the case ( paint onto paint) but will now look in to cheaper paints as Cuprinol Shades costs so much.

Things are usually cheaper for a reason.;)

As my old Dad used to say, "you only get what you pay for".

I tried the 'no nonsense' garden paint on recommendation.
It's half the price of cuprinol and i don't regret using it.. it'll be first choice in the future.
Some products are just good value and Screwfix have a large name to protect.
Having said that I'd agree with Pete that some cheap stuff can be rubbish. You can only speak as you find. :noidea:

Just an update, and I appreciated your tips Pete and JR.My fence was painted a couple of years ago with Cuprinol Shades paint in a pale green, but the price of the paint is eye watering, so I used dark oak one coat I found in B&Q ( although will do two coats) it was only £8 for a large tub.It looks fine! Am very happy with it indeed. The darker colour makes the fences recede into the background and make the garden look bigger.I did like the pale green colour but it kind of ‘came at you’ instead of looking at the plants.I also did the shed with it ( previously painted a chestnut colour) and that looks good too.
