I have been looking at my packets, I sure some could be started earlier that they state.

    Can anyone advise?

My usual thoughts are, I'm sure some should be started later than they state.

But it mostly depends on your growing on conditions, anyone can germinate seeds at anytime of the year.
Growing them on is the problem.
I might get round to sowing a few onion seed in the next couple of weeks, the rest can stay in the packet for a couple of months.:)

I intend to start off some perennials as soon as the seeds arrive (already ordered). However I'm breaking the rules. I'm going to use my new home made grow cabinet to try to trick them into thinking its later in the year than it is.

Hi Liliana , I would go with Petes advice .:blue thumb: We all get a little impatient to get going in January , but early sowing rarely gives an advantage . In fact I think one of my first posts on here was why are my seedlings so tall and leggy - answer -sowed to early, no light !
I start my Chillies at the end of January. I then wait until the last week in Feb to start growing stuff on my prop. For the few veg I grow I have followed the planting time advice on here , seems to work OK .

Onion's in the next few days and Aubergines towards the end of the month.

Starting seeds too early just makes plants leggy as they search for light ( Etiolation ), this makes them fragile and difficult to handle...just so you can harvest a week or two earlier.

Go with the directions on the seed packet is the best advice and if you want to try to grow early then do a split sowing, some now and the rest at the time recommended on the packet, most times the later sown (packet advised sowing time) seed will catch up the earlier sown seed, some times they will overtake the earlies. And nearly always they will have a healthier crop.

Of course this all changes if you use grow lights.

            Steve...:)
