Does anyone recognise what this is? I bought it unlabelled and almost dead from the sale table at a garden centre for 50p over 12 years ago. What there was of it was less than a foot high, and more of a stick than a plant. I stuck it in the ground - and now look at it: my pride and joy!! It is evergreen with really tiny flowers (about 3mm). It has just come into flower and the bees are obsessed with it. I thought it might be an abelia - but the flowers aren't right - judging from pictures I've seen.

Hi @LizPond I think it is a cotoneaster - but which I don't know ('Cornubia'? Hybridus pendulus?). However I would expect to see tons of berries in autumn so I'm probably wrong.

@noisette47 I've just looked that up and although it isn't (different flowers) - it did lead me to find out what it actually is; a Cotoneaster Franchetii.
Wow - after all these years of wondering and fruitless searching on-line - an educated guess leads me straight to the answer!! MANY THANKS :hapfeet::hapydancsmil:

Cotoneaster are rather a large group of shrubs.
It is not always easy to say for sure which one is which...even for experts.
I rarely even attempt an id past Cotoneaster.
        Especially as Cotoneasters can hybridise.
        Further detail is often needed.

Quote from Bean trees and shrubs see 2nd link.

"An evergreen shrub 8 to 10 ft high, with slender, gracefully arching branches, which the first year are covered with a dense, pale brown wool. Leaves oval, tapering towards both ends, from 3⁄4 to 11⁄4 in. long, about half as wide, pointed; upper surface rather hairy when young, lustrous green later, lower surface covered with a thick, whitish, afterwards pale brown felt; stalk 1⁄8 in. or less long. Flowers borne in corymbs of five to fifteen flowers terminating short, lateral, leafy twigs; petals erect, white, touched with rose on the outside; calyx felted like the under-surface of the leaves. Fruit oblong, 1⁄4 to 1⁄3 in. long; orange-scarlet; nutlets usually three."
