    Just finished making a small raised planter -- soil area 30 x 13.5 x 10 inches deep.
    Photos later
As it is late in the season I have ordered some Radish seeds, Scarlet Globe variety; I saw them mentioned favourably on this forum
Just wondering what other seeds I might sow with them that will be fairly quick to grow ?
I believe Radish seeds only take about 5 weeks given decent weather
    Any advice much appreciated
    John

      Good evening Cordy

I have a vegtrug at the side of the house which I have been growing radish in this year quite successfully. I have sown with radish some mizuna lettuce, cress and spring onions. All seem to thrive quite happily together, the spring onion do take a bit longer, but I have been thinning them out and using the thinnngs when picking lettuce and radish. I can also give a thumbs up to Scarlet Globe and cress is always a winner as it is so quick and tasty.

      Currently in the trug are;
Spring Onion - White Lisbon, Performer and Welsh Red
Radish - Sparkler 3, Albena and Cherry Belle

The trug does have it’s own frame and cover so I am hoping for a longer season and it being at the side of the house, it benefits from heat from the brick wall and some protection from the wind.

I’m no expert, I’m sure there will be someone along soon with tried and tested suggestions.

Well done on the raised bed
      Tink

Lettuce, rocket and spinach are all very quick to grow. I sow them in succession so i have a constant supply. You could squeeze in a couple of lettuce and double that for rocket and spinach in your space.

Cheers @JWK -- I have ordered Rocket seeds
Hello @tinkerbell, just looked up 'vegtrug'
Apparently that is what I am constructing
My builder neighbour gave me some wooden posts that would have gone to the tip
          Should finish the 'project' tomorrow
          Here are the posts

Hi @Cordy they are a great freebie, perfect for a raised bed. Here is a pic from earlier in the year of the vegtrug in action...looking forward to seeing your new build later.

            Tink.

Just sown some Runner Beans and Beetroot outdoors last week, already germinated so if its a good early autumn should still get a harvest.

Would have sown some Salad Leaves Lettuce but our packet was empty as were the stocks of the one local shop we went to, did not want to risk other places a.t.m !

Autumn onion sets are a crop to fill the soil with over winter, might not be too late to sow and grow some Leeks, might not be big but still worth a try, if you like them ?
Not expensive seed or some garden centers might still have pots of young plants ??

A very Regal vegtrug @Cordy fit for a king (will have to find some aptly named seeds to go in it).

Well done on your hard work

Would garden fleece help and speed up germination ?

                    Hi,

Fleece may help if it turns cold at night, alos putting it verical like @Tinkerbelle61 has done to protect more against these wild winds.

Radish should come up within the week, they like plenty of water , but slugs like Radish so you need to take precautions, eg copper tape or simlar.

Looks like you have painted /treated the inside of the planter ? usually find lining them with thick polythene help preserve things.

Yes @ricky101 painted 3 coats inside, - should be OK though; it's more than 30 mm thick

To help them germinate and grow quicker, add some hot water to your watering can so its about 20-25c as cold water from the tap can give the seed / plants a bit of a check.

Would avoid water from a Butt on seeds and seedlings.

                          Morning @ricky101 and @Cordy

Raised bed looks great @Cordy I am still sowing in my trug under cover. The trug comes with its own frame and two types of covers. Currently it has the summer cover on (pic 1) which is more like a strong insect net cover than fleece and for winter it has a clear plastic cover so it is possible to grow all year round (winter lettuce, radish, spring onions).

I have a small trug that does not have a frame or covers which I have put fleece on, currently has broccoli in (pic 2). 0E1CE8E2-0CC2-4F44-BADF-A8FA8F04EC66.jpeg 6BE7263F-B23B-4236-B2FD-20A8125CE8D3.jpeg
The fleece is only held down with some bits of wood, with the wind we have had (are having) the fleece is tearing quite easily. If you can make a frame maybe from some plumbing hose and secure strong fleece to it that may work to get a longer season from the raised bed.

Hope this helps, stay dry and happy Tuesday!
