          longk, seeing your Impatiens in flower is quite appropriate.

          Last week someone at the bridge club told me one of their fuschias had suddenly grown a couple of very long stems right from the root. Most of the plant was 18" and the stems were already topping 30". They said they had pulled one of the stems and potted it up and would give it to me as our garden can take tall plants.

          When he gave it to me I thought that the leaves weren't particularly like fuschia leaves and Mrs Shiney and I thought we recognised them. But, as there were tiny flower buds forming we thought we would wait. We kept it on the kitchen windowsill and yesterday morning some of the buds produced white flowers.

          It wasn't a fuschia but it was what we thought it was - Impatiens gladulifera :hate-shocked:

          So, when I saw him yesterday afternoon I told him the best thing to do with his plant :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

            Funnily enough the chap in the unit next to mine had one pop up last week too. He bought me a snip in to id. Most upset when I told him what I thought it was but his wife wanted to keep it:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

            The lady who sent me seed for I.balfourii assured me that it's not a problem in her garden, as it germinates far too late if left to its own devices.

            I must get an id for one growing wild on our industrial estate...............

              I grew I.balfourii in my mum's garden a few years ago; it grew no taller than 18", lovely little bushy plants covered in flowers and loved by bees :dbgrtmb: . It did self seed around a bit but was never a nuisance like the 'Himalayan Balsam':hate-shocked: , if some did pop where I didn't want them they pulled up easily enough.

                Mine have flourished, with three of the earlier plantings standing a metre up and out now. Will certainly be a feature in future years.
                In fact, some of the choicer Impatiens are going to be a major part of my collection from now on. I.kilimanjaro has thrived in a pot outdoors this summer..............
