What's Looking Good October 2024

I picked a lot of cooking apples, don't know how much but more than what's in the pic.

 

This is something that 'appeared' in a little spare area under my bedroom window, and I just put some canes in for it to climb up. The bees love it, as with all nasturtiums, and it's lovely sitting on the bench and hearing them buzzing away. Been flowering all summer.
I grow nasturtiums, but never ones with variegated foliage. I can forgive it that though - because of the bee value

 

Makes a lovely contrast with your wall and seat @fairygirl - the red is zinging!

 

It's a shame that the colours have come out wishy-washy on the photo. The Arbutus is looking stunning at the moment...

 

Definitely looking good @noisette47 ! Sadly my arbutus menzii didn't like the winter before last and just died away, even though it was already nearly 2m tall.

 

That is the one I wish I had bought, madrone, I think its known to be just slightly tender.

 

I've got two surviving A.u.rubra from a shameful tally of 14 attempts . Some from seed, some that turned out to be the ordinary white. I'm not going to push my luck trying to grow an even fussier species

 

Well it's pretty mild here, but I think that late frost in Nov 22 just hit it, and it died back bit by bit. Tbh the bark wasn't as pretty as I'd hoped. I think it'll have to be Acer griseum for bark instead.

@pete I have just found that the second flower stem on the Butia has some berries partly hidden by Dicksonia fronds.

 

Ah what a shame. Do you have Eucalyptus, Caroline? I find they peel spectacularly all year round, here, probably because of the extremes of wet and dry.
