    Hello all

    I hope you are well.

I have got a small Weeping Cherry (?) in the front garden where some of its branches are trailing on the ground.

I usually trim these to between 8" and 12" above the ground in Early Spring but with everything going on this year I did not manage to get it done.

When would be the next best time to trim the branches?

    Thanks in advance

    Kevin

I hope you are well too @Kevin Cowans. :)

I know very little about Cherry trees but I've just done a little research on the internet out of interest. It would seem that weeping Cherries should be pruned at the same time as sweet Cherries which is early summer, about now in fact. I checked a number of websites and this was the most popular answer.

@Kevin Cowans Cherries ornamental and fruiting, plums and greengages are pruned in summer, when it is drier to try and prevent silverleaf disease which is a fungus and spreads more easily in the cooler damper months.

        Hello @Sheal and @NigelJ

Thanks for the replies, and the information, it is appreciated.

I managed to get out and trim the long trailing branches and the branches growing straight up, it now looks much better.

I just got back in the house before it started to rain, so glad I got it done.

        Thanks

        Kevin

I never knew that, I've always pruned after flowering on ornamentals so as to give enough of the season over to 'old wood' formation

I've just double checked and it's to avoid bacterial canker in cherries.
I'm sure having time to properly ripen helps the new growth come through the winter and to flower the next season.
