    Hi

My old lawn mower has given its last cut, I need to start looking for a replacement but there are so many on the market I don’t know where to begin, can you help, what would you choose, which make and why.

What type of mower are you thinking on Weedaway? The size of your garden will dictate that perhaps. Ride-on, petrol mower, electric etc.

I have tried many kinds, but with the size of my garden it will have to be a self propelled petrol lawn mower. I had one for many years but it rusted out eventually, I had good use of it, it was a 50 cm single blade, I bought a replacement Draper but it was difficult to start because it transpired that the auto choke was missing, then I saw a machine which had a Quad blade, has anyone had experience of one of these.

I recently bought a Hayter Harrier 56 electric start which is good. It has a push button starter and starts first time - as long as you charge the battery. The battery is a large Lithium that unclips very easily and the charger (provided) will do a full charge from very low in just an hour (they say). As you can check the charge, press button lights up the guage, it's easy to decide when to charge it.

        Other makes are available :heehee:

About an acre, fairly flat but at the moment it is like a jungle.

I had thoughts of some kind of scarifier to flatten out the bumps caused by ant hills, it might be moles I'm not sure.

It would be nice if I could find a lawn mower with a scarifier attachment, better still someone to do the job while I watch!

If I had an acre, I would struggle to contain myself from buying a ride on mower - - maybe it is the wee boy in me.

I have no personal experience of them, but the two brands that immediately spring to mind for me are Hayter and Honda.

An acre is certainly very large, I had a ride-on for my 1/4 acre for a while but it wasn't really worth it time-wise. I can nip over mine with a petrol rotary just as quick plus it looks better as the ride-on didn't give a nice effect at the edges.

You must need something in the professional lawnmower range for that lawn size, sorry that's out of my experience. Another thing to consider are the robotic lawnmowers, I know someone on here got one last year and it saves him lots of time. Expensive to buy and set up in the first place though.

The first lawn mower I bought when I moved into this house was a Hayter. What load of rubbish it was. So never again. Its replacement, still going strong in its 21st or 22nd season was a self propelled MTD.

For a 1 acre plot, I would get a ride on Husqvarna if they are available there. Whatever one is bought, think to the future and make sure it has a B&S motor.

Found the blog of the ex-member that got the robotic lawnmower, he bought husqvarna automowers - they install a sensor wire around the edges of all the lawns.

I did look at and consider a ride on mower, but there were other considerations which have already been pointed out above like the edges and quality of cut so there may be a need for a standard type mower in addition, all starting to sound a bit involved for me.

A robotic lawnmower sounds too complicated for me, apart from that there is a sense of wanting to have hands on and do it myself.

Has anyone had or have experience of the 'Quad cut' machines.

I'm not to bothered about the name on the mower, I believe most petrol mowers have B&S motors so the name on the mower may not be so important, I had a Draper recently which just fell apart and had bits missing on arrival but when I got the engine going it ran fine.

No mention of a Quad cut so far!

It's got to be a ride on mower - for a lawn just shy the size of a football pitch - surely .

I've never heard of quad cut machines / lawnmowers before with out googling it and finding a lawnmower on amazon? Seen as a doing mostly mowing work wise nearly everyday I would already discount it as probably a cheap Chinese machine which I class as a throw away mower.

The best engines on lawnmowers are kawasaki or Honda engines they will easily outlast a briggs engine , the quality of the B&S have gone down hill compared to other suppliers of engines which is mostly down to the cost and they are again made in china, but some are still made in the US. They do still do the job and overall not bad when you start comparing price / weight / power to a honda / kawasaki engine.

I can't make any recommendations I don't know what your budget is ? but personally you'd be better buying a second hand pro machine than a new low spec mower especially with the size of the lawn, it will outlast it multiple times.

And if you wanted attachments like scarifiers you'll have to look more into the cylinder mowers qualcast - allett - atco etc
