Hi. I saw this rather magnificent palm in front of a business property in Llanelli yesterday. It obviously is pretty old. Which palm is it please? Butia? Washingtonia?
    Thanks PalmTreeSm.jpg

Canary date palm is supposed to be H2 hardiness. That's surprising... although coastal, I wouldn't have thought Llanelli was warm enough:spinning:

Once established they seem capable of taking fairly low temperatures as long as it's not continuous frost.

I'm trying for the third time this winter with a plant I've had in a pot for about 10yrs. Not managed to keep one up till now although they grow quite well around the coasts here.
Also they stand a better chance if close to buildings.

Well the palm I saw was SO close I'm surprised the wall isn't being affected! And surrounded by stone too, so presumably reflecting lots of heat.

The wall will be helping lots. Our palm that has a south facing wall behind it is growing really quickly.

We bought a CIDP about 4 years ago with the view that it cost the same as a big bunch of flowers. If we lost it after a year, we hadn't lost much.
The palm is taken in over winter and is doing really well. I'll be repotting it this year with the intention of planting it out if it gets to a good size.

It also depends what soil it's growing in! Good drainage is all-important. Mine withstood -17C and 50cm of snow for 10 days in 2010/11. Got rid of it because I'd had enough of being savaged every time I went near

I could be wrong, I have been know to be :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

But I have an inkling that palms are not a big problem when planted close to buildings.
The monocot root system is not considered likely to undermine foundations.

I certainly hope not anyway, as my 20ft waggie is only 4 ft from my conservatory:yikes:

Can confirm that! It took me two months to get out the remains of a Trachycarpus riddled with palm moth larvae, but that was because it was a huge, dense, heavy rootball. Very compact, though.

I hope we dont, but I wouldn't be surprised bearing in mind the amount of imported ones you see in garden centres.

Not only moths here but red palm weevils too. And a big increase in tree-attacking moths (like the goat moth) generally

I think im right in saying a ban on importing palms is coming very soon because of the threat of the red weevils etc?
