    Hi,

We are about to do some lounge redecoration covering over the existing Magnolia so were looking around the web for what White emulsion would give the best coverage over the darker colour.

Dulux Brilliant White Matt seemed to come out top on several sites, so before we went out to get some just checked the prices/availability at the usual places.

On B&Qs site was surprised to see it was only getting 2 stars ? and reading the many reviews from the last month or so it was getting lots of really bad comments, mostly that it was anything but White ! some asking why B&Q were still selling it ?

Thought we ought to ask around and see what folks here can recommend as a White Matt Emulsion with good coverage and finish.

    I'm doing some decorating atm.
I tend to use Johnston's paint.

It's probably not the cheapest but I do find it covers well.
The acrylics tend to dry without that slightly sticky feel the likes of Dulux seems to give.

Generally use Johnstones Trade Aqua for the woodwork, though their local trade center charges top price to joe public, for their 1ltr cans it was almost as cheap to buy 2.5ltr cans from The Paint Shed !

Seems their Trade Emulsion is very expensive, but the 'domestic' range is around, though in various packages like here at Argos, selling 6 and 10ltsrs for the same price, but unable to see what the difference is ?

This is what I'm using, the price was ridiculous, but having said that, 10litres for £16 has to be mostly water surely?
I've never seen those versions of Johnstone's paint, I didn't know they made different ranges.

They are a heavy price, but if they do the job?

Have used the Aqua paints for a few years and the Whites do very slowly yellow when not in good light.
The can of that Acrylic states Non Yellowing, so might be worth a go, if you can say it does not ?

The one that says acrylic and non yellowing is a can of tinted stuff.
The brilliant white is a can left over from last year, all I can say is its not gone yellow yet.

But to me its more about coverage, I dont like keep having to recoat.
I've bought cheap stuff and often you need three coats to get a decent non patchy finish.

I'd go for that, its a darn sight cheaper there than what I paid for the tinted stuff.

Agreed, i always use Leyland trade emulsion paint from Screwfix.
Great covering power, but it's always gonna need two coats over magnolia for a top job i guess.

They sell Leyland in the Johnstones place I go, but just shows how peoples tastes are different as I always avoid leyland stuff.

Guess it's what works for you, and how much you don't mind forking out.
Outside paint has to be crown sandtex for me, and Leyland emulsion for general indoors.
However I'll buy more specific scrubbable paints for kitchen areas.

Just checked with our local Johnstones trade outlet for one of their Trade Covaplus Emulsions in 5 and 10ltr and was quoted £30 and £45, but annoyingly can buy the same online from three places for £25 and £36, free delivery with an Amazon seller.
