There are some nice ones in ikea and b and q i want to buy but they specifically say for indoor plants use only. I want to use them to water a plant that is outside . Does it invalidate the warranty or insurance if I use it to water an outdoor plant

Maybe they are thinking of frost damage?

It's all about labelling regulations I think.

I find reading labels most entertaining, the best so far is a bag of carrots from Tesco, boasting it's suitable for vegetarians

Phew! I'm pleased they sorted that out as I wasn't sure whether to use them in a veggie stir fry. :phew:

Plastic watering cans can get brittle if left outside if not UV stable.

I think perhaps it is because of the small capacity? 1 litre is not much use for watering the garden.
Neither of the listings actually forbid outdoor use, as far as I can see.

The ikea one is 2litres and specifically says for indoor use only under the safety and compliance heading

I’m sure it is more to do with its robustness for being left outside when not in use. It does say it has good resistance to rust, so they probably wouldn’t want people leaving them out in the elements and then complaining that it has deteriorated. I’d certainly use it outside (although it’s a bit small) but keep it inside.
It’s a bit like buying clothing with dry clean only labels, despite being made of washable materials. A shop assistant did tell me that the labels were often put in purely to cover the manufacturers. Probably couldn’t be bothered to test that the items did actually survive washing, so specifying dry cleaning would cover them, at the customer’s cost and inconvenience. I do use my own judgement and wash nearly everything. If I know it’s a risk, eg silk, I’ll get it dry cleaned the first few times. Then I’ll risk a careful handwash. When I’ve had it so long that I’m not bothered if it survives, I’ll sling it in the washing machine! Very few disasters!

It so they can sell you the exact same model labelled as for outdoor use only as well.

Why not buy one labelled for outdoor use, you can then use it indoors or outdoors without worry.

A metal watering can is best stored in dry conditions when not in use. Some plastic ones can be less robust than others so best not left in blazing sun for weeks on end - if that is likely to occur
Marking this item for indoor use only is totally meaningless. Then again, most labels are !!

This reminds me of an episode of Minder, or possibly Fool and Horses.
He was trying to sell a consignment of water damaged umbrellas.
