OK, so after all those requests...well, a couple of people... er... somebody...once... [IMG] asked for some piccies of our local wild flowers...

We're in the south of the French department of Lot, just south of Cahors, if you have a map handy! Which means we're a bit further south than Venice, Milan and Turin in Italy, and quite a bit further south than Bordeaux.

Our local glories at the moment are two species which were once very common in Britain, but have very much declined. The first is the cowslip - out now along all the field edges - these photos were all taken on our farm, by the way:

The next is the snake's head fritillary. We have a "chaume" - a hay meadow - in the bottom of the valley and it's nice and damp. The fritillaries love it. Among them are a few double-headed ones, and even the odd white one with the palest of pink blushes:

There are huge areas of lady's smock, too:

Hope the close-ups are good enough; I only have my ageing 2.0 megapixel Canon A40 in use at the moment - the serious Canon 100mm macro lens and automatic bellows are still waiting in boxes!!

More flowers in the next thread....

Hi, Ha! These are lovely and make mine pale into insignificance!

However, I have been out today to the "city" of Portim£o from my little country retreat and got an early birthday present ... The Collins Complete Mediterranean Wildlife book by Paul Sterry. It has EVERYTHING in it from birds and butterflies to wildflowers and and reptiles.

PS Why are you posting your Wildflowers in Wildlife instead of the Wildflower section? Guess is all a bit wild here so doesn't matter! [IMG]

Very nice Hyla and I just love the fritillary. They are called Schachbrettblumen here. I tried them years ago but had no luck whatsoever.

Your new (birthday) book sounds great LofL, covering everything as it does. Bet you won't get your nose out of it!
