Hello, it's that time of year when we are all itching to get back into the swing of gardening and pottering around outside from dawn until dusk with mud under our nails and beautiful looking gardens!

Anyway I went into Wilkinson's (Peterborough) today and noticed that they now have their summer bulbs in! ... & they were even 3 for 2 so of course I came out with some healthy looking bulbs/tubers! ( Not that i really needed anymore! :heehee: ) I ended up getting:
1 Dahlia Pompom, Nescio in red.
1 Dahlia Cactus, Jura in pink/white.
3 Lilium Asiatic, Mona Lisa in Pink.

Has anybody else gave into the temptation of Wilkinson and grabbed themselves new bulbs, seeds or equipment?

        I don't have a Wilkos around here.............

However, I feel that it's my duty to lead you astray! So if you're in there again look for Hymenocallis festallis. A flowering sized bulb can cost up to a fiver, but the "sheds" (eg; Wilkos, B&Q etc, and many large garden centres) sell three bulbs for three or four quid. What they don't tell you is that they're a year or two off of flowering, but they're very easy to grow and multiply readily (even non flowering size bulbs).
It's a tender bulb so best pot grown.
If you get some let us know on this thread and I'll give you detailed care instructions.

This is what you'll be working towards....................

          They get large when mature...................

Hymenocallis make a good spring flowering houseplant as above or a summer flowering pot specimen in the garden................

:lunapic 130165696578242 5: I've led you astray and got you interested in tender plants!

Seriously though, it's a plant that has a real WOW factor, but is fairly easy. Let us know if you find them.
Here's a link to some of my fave bulbs.

I used to grow Hymenocallis in the Palm House in Weymouth (many years ago) the scent was fantastic.:dbgrtmb:

Lillies from bulbs may not reach their true height in the first year so don't be disappointed if they are shorter than the stated maximum height.
