Wilkos sell loose grass seed , you weigh it and bag it yourself. They have play lawn seed and also fine lawn seed at £5.40 / Kg . Has anyone tried this , does it give good germination ? If not what is a good brand of grass seed to overseed a scarified lawn with ?

    TIA

I made my entire back lawn from seed bought from Wilkos. I didn't get the loose stuff, but I did buy their cheapest bagged stuff. It germinated fine and made a decent lawn.

I used it last year too Harry.
Brought both mixtures and mixed them up in a bag.
Sown last September and has come through the winter looking ok, just needs a feed and a cut

I get my lawn seed from
        http://www.bostonseeds.com/products/1/Grass-Seeds/1/Lawn-Seeds/
although probably not cost effective unless you have a reasonable area to sow.

        Economy grass seed £3.20/kg,
        Hard wearing £3.50,
        Fine lawn seed £3.70,
        Child's Play £4.10,
        Shady £3.90,
        Low maintenance £4.50,
        Bowling Green £5.00

Prices based on buying 10 kg, but makes Wilcos look not-that-cheap ??

Hey Harry, Your dog / Bitch? I have experience with the Wilco hardwearing weigh yourself stuff it stands upto dog urine really well, the only downside is its really fast growing - and contains loads of Rye so quite thick - you will need to cut it twice a week in summer, but as long as you dont cut it too short it will deal well with dog urine. I oversead every year as its so cheap to keep lawn nice and thick I can upload some pics of my lawn removation if you like with the wilco seed..

I think that's possibly? an extra pitfall of buying "Brand X Grass Seed" from a local supermarket / "Shed" where there is little choice of types?

If you get a mix with dwarf Ryegrass, in a reasonably modest proportion, then it won't generate a shaggy lawn that needs frequent cutting :)

However, I don't know how you know that a mix includes a Ryegrass that is dwarf (unless it specifically says so, I'm not sure that many/any do?), but I suspect that the pucker brands are offering exactly that. The only one I turned up easily is this:
        http://www.lawnsmith.co.uk/shop/grass-seed/grass-seed/classic-lawn-grass-seed/
but no indication of proportions of the varieties ... I suspect that Boston's "popular" brands ("Economy" and "Childs Play") do ... but they just call it"amenity perennial ryegrass" which may, or may not!, be dwarf. "http://www.bostonseeds.com/products/1/Grass-Seeds/1/Lawn-Seeds/

Could ask them I suppose ...

LawnSmith have this on their site, which I think is apposite:

        A word about rye grass

Somewhere along the line rye grass seems to have got a bad name for itself. I don’t know why or when, but today’s dwarf amenity rye grass species are beautiful, giving by far the best green that a grass can have. If you don’t want a bowling green and your soil is neither extremely wet nor extremely dry then having some rye grass content in your lawn turf or grass seed mixture will work and look great.

Here is the Wilco hard wearing lawn seed. If you are not prepated to mow twice a week i would look at options metioned by Kristen above.

Hi Kirsten - Just spoke with Boston Seeds who were very helpful - all of the mixes (with the exception of the economy) which contain Rye are dwarf variety ryegrass. They also have another site kissmygrass - prices differ slightly between the two so might be worth a look on there too Harry.
