I'm attempting to cheer up the entrance to my flat, and have just placed a Clematis in a planter next to the front door (currently a drain and downpipe is all that greets visitors!). However I happen to live in basement flat, with an entrance that is below road level and faces due north. It's therefore somewhat dark, and probably gets about an hour or so's worth of light at most. I tried to find a very shade tolerant type and went for a 'Suzy Mac', but a visiting friend thought it was unlikely to grow given the lack of direct sunlight.

I was hoping the experts here could give me their opinion on whether it's likely grow in this position. The trellis and planter are not yet fixed, so could be shifted to the right in the photo next to the window where it would get a bit more direct sun, but i'd prefer to keep it in its drain concealing position, if possible!

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I'm no expert on clematis but I reckon it's got a good chance of growing OK down there.

She'll do absolutely fine there because she is tolerant of shade. Plus she won't get huge either. Just remember to prune her around March time :blue thumb:

I say yes as plenty of light reflecting off the walls

'Suzy Mac' will do fine there, will get to between 2-2.5 metres

That's excellent news, thanks for the feedback @JWK @"M" and @Ian Taylor. @Spruce oh yes that never occurred to me, thanks :) Now all I need to worry about is having the trellis drilled to the wall before the whole thing gets stolen!
