Something to think about is this extract in a tech warning

"If you're taking up Microsoft on its offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10, you should know that the new operating system has a feature, called Wi-Fi Sense, that automatically shares your Wi-Fi passwords with others.

When Wi-Fi Sense is enabled, anyone you have in your Skype, Outlook or Hotmail contacts lists — and any of your Facebook friends — can be granted access to your Wi-Fi network as long as they're within range. Microsoft added this feature to save users' time and hassle, but as independent security blogger Brian Krebs put it, some security experts see it as "a disaster waiting to happen."

I'm beginning to think there aint nothing free in this world.
Why do they offer it free?

There must be a catch, I know when I went from XP to 8, that it wouldn't do all that XP did, without me paying money, like playing DVDs.

I might me synical, but I dont trust them.

I can't think of anyone who would think you're cynical, Pete:dunno:

Good morning @pete you are not cynical you are just down to earth,;)

          [IMG]:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Only if I go out of my way to click the option to share the network with my contacts. Notice that it is not selected by default.

All these nightmare scenarios are possible ... but farfetched. Even the worst-case scenario -- a stalker using Wi-Fi Sense to steal your naked photos -- would require that person to sit outside your house with a Windows 10 PC while he hacks into your network:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

But if you do want to protect those naked photos and you shared your network via Wi-Fi Sense you can stop that. Windows 10 lets you do that in settings (it takes a few days to register). You can also opt your network out of Wi-Fi Sense entirely by adding the phrase "_optout" to the end of your Wi-Fi network's name.

I suppose there is the possibility that you can opt in unwittingly if you don't quite understand what it implies. Caveat Emptor!

Opt outs are frowned upon by all consumer organisations as they imply that things will operate unless you opt out. I suppose the best thing in this situation would be a warning popping up, with a full explanation, about the implications of using it.

It seems likely, to a cynic (not me ;) :heehee:), that it's a good opportunity to stop supporting the other systems much earlier than normal.

It would save them a major expense of running a support team and they could always say that you could have had the latest version free - so it's your fault! :dunno: :mute:

The only real problem I can see with this, is if the householder has limited broadband, they could find themselves having to pay out more to replace what the stalker has used.

Good evening everyone Windows 10 is not compulsory (Yet) its a bit like Marmite you will either love it or hate it,I have a suspicion that Big Brother already has all our details before Windows 10 was released ,I have been using it for a few months now and there are a few things Woo is not happy with but felt the same with Windows 8.1,I wanted to give it a fair crack of the whip before I made my mind up;)

Just completed my install, and first impressions are reasonably good. Slightly laggy at the moment, but I suspect that is more to do with the need for a clean and defrag - time will tell

I can not find the site with geeks discussing WIN 10, though I seem to recall, that in a year it is moving to CLOUD as Adobe cs6 has done, with an annual payment to access, so you rent access to your OS

Thanks. Well...the link uses words like "may be" and "is likely" so nothing hard and fast there - just indications which are enough to be off-putting though.

I just do not wish to be suckered into a rent it or lose all your data scenario, so I intend to switch to Linux, (I could manage it but many many people will not, it is a geeks thing)
