    Hi all,

I bought one about 4 years ago. It was supposed to be the orange variety. After four years its grown a lot but i seem to get two variety's on one plant. I have the orange AND the normal yellow type all on the same plant. Is this normal ?

The yellow seems more vigerous than the orange.

I wonder if one plant has been grafted onto the root stock of another?

you two up above you are both right its been grafted on to Hemerocallis Virgianus ? if I remember properley normal rootstock for all named cultivars .

You need to take it off so the variety you want to keep gets more space air light to grow, its like having a cuckoo in the nest taking most and in the end all of the food !!!!

Tie string on to the branches you want to cut out (dont get confused) right back to the main stem just under the union graft if its above the soil.

If growing out of the soil try and rip it out sounds harsh but it will take the growing point with it if you use this method, if you cut it it has a 90% chance of growing back.

    Hope I have explained properley

Ive just had a look and the main stem seems to be the Yellow flowered variety and the smaller weaker stems seem to the be the Orange. If i cut the yellow out them im not going to have a plant :(

Then leave it alone and move on. It will be a reminder to chose wisely the next time. We all make mistakes.

Not to buy a grafted one the next time. To buy a true tree.

Bit hard to buy a true tree when almost all the coloured varieties are grafted ones.
Harsh but the weakened state of the orange one is down to the yellow one. I would bit the bullet and do as originally suggested. We have a lovely purple flowered one which was eaten down almost to the rootstock by a rabbit. It has taken a while but it is growing again nicely now. If you do decide to prune then give the plant a good feed with a general fertiliser afterwards to help it regrow.

To cut or not to cut in the question ..

ps is it from the ground or just by the graft part

Can you buy Hamamelis x intermedia 'Orange Peel' on non grafted stock ? I have never seen it

Besides, when you buy a plant you expect it to do what it says on the label. Yes you get the odd sucker but this plant it seems like the native original is the substantive plant.

I dont think ive done anything wrong and its in the perfect position also.

        Hi Spruce.
All stems are from the ground. Yellow or not, it was gorgeous today. With the warm sun, the scent was amazing.
I wont gut it as it lovely as it is but its just a bit annoying when you buy a plant the main stem is the wrong variety. :(
