Hi, we've been given a load of wood chip which has come from conifers which we could put on top of some borders instead of bark. Does it matter that it comes from conifers or would that make the soil too acidic? Thanks

      Hiya Nessa
No expert but I have always reckoned conifer chips to be slightly acid.
I have used wood chips in the past and found no disadvantage to them but a big plus as a moisture conserving mulch.
One point though, I like to mulch in autumn or early spring; in this heat, you would need to water well then mulch. I would also scatter a balanced fertiliser before watering and mulching. Stops weeds too, if applied thickly
For me, highly beneficial Nessa :)
