At least I know what this is. This was taken through the double glazing, because they are so shy, the slightest movement and they are away. There were two in the garden when I took this, neither of them our regular one. He/she has a 'dirty' chest.

I've seen these in the woods here, not close like this, unfortunately - but I did find a spotty feather on the path....

Lovely to have them in your garden, Palustris! :D

Great photo, Palustris. I get one regular on the peanut cage and a green woodpecker on the lawn. Can't get decent photos like yours though

Great picture - unfortunately whilst I have the same visitor, my feeders are not close enough to get a piccie.

They have green ones at Grinshill. I was trying to stalk one that was on the ground - probably eating ants but I could not get close enough and they are skittish

They are very common in Hatfield Forest, but you can't get close. You see them flying off giving their laughing warning cry which gives them their folk name - the Yaffle.

Saw them in Delamere Forest once too, and they are supposed to be in the woods behind us (extremely private, trespassers will be shot), but they do not come as far as us.
Quite pleased with the spotted woody.
Has anyone ever seen or photographed the lesser spotted one?
