Xanthocerus sorbifolium

Browsing Baumaux's catalogue, like you do, I came across this shrubby tree. It looks like a good candidate to withstand everything that SW France can chuck at it. Has anyone on here grown it?

Not something I've ever grown, but it looks interesting.

 

Although The RHS says it needs shelter from cold winds.

 

Not as much as an evergreen would! It's related to Koelreuteria and that has done well here from seed. It's busy self-sowing now The main issue would be drainage, I think. I wonder why it's not more well-known?

 

Well.
It states hot summers, so it wouldn't really be known that well over here.
It says it comes from N.China so I would think it was bone hardy as well.
Doesn't like wet soil.

I don't take anything for granted now, Caroline You'd think that Ceanothus would thrive here, but they only last about 4 years. Yet Loropetalum grows like a weed..... With good soil prep, anything's worth a try..

 

I think that is true, quite a lot of the stuff in my garden would not have been planted had I followed what is often written.

 

You two @pete and @noisette47 - you're just trying to persuade me that I NEED it! And of course I'm spending less in lockdown...

 

I would have thought the picture would persuade you you needed one.

Don't you start @Upsydaisy ! I am getting more and more persuaded to buy one! I'm amazed I haven't seen it before. I am now checking that catalogue that @noisette47 mentioned for other delights...

 

Wouldn't Burncoose be a better bet, @CarolineL? If you end up having to pay duty on plants from France, on top of Baumaux's prices, it could be an expensive gamble
