I'm not sure about using water retaining gel in a permanent year round container. Is there a risk of it freezing in the winter? I don't know, I've never used them, perhaps someone knows.

Why? Well, consider all those babies with the same stuff stuffed into their disposables ... imagine the outcry if those granules FROZE in winter?

Yeah but they're all wrapped up nice and cosy, I'd be worried about them if they were outside in the freezing cold wearing nowt but a nappy.

      (....... That was a night that was, oh the memories ! ! ! )

The front of my house faces south east "M" so it gets sun from sunrise until about 6pm in the summer. The baskets that are attached to the walls are a nightmare to keep watered and to keep plants alive, they fry in the sun, even in the cooler conditions here in the north.
