    The lousy weather serves to remind us that the season is done. So now is a good time to look back and I was wondering what your best plants were this year?

    Mine were;
    Longest flowering plant - easily Salvia discolor.................
    [IMG]

    It started blooming back in April and it is still blooming well today.

    Best new plant was harder. In the end I've decided it was Salvia dolichantha.................
    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    It bloomed for about six weeks and is just too beautiful not to have as a garden staple from now on.

    And finally, my best plant of 2014. There were a few contenders;
    Bomarea edulis was a vastly improved plant since planting it out. If I knew that it would prove to be hardy it may very well have won..................
    [IMG]

    Impatiens niamniamensis has been magnificent in the shady part of my tropical bed. This is a photo of it today in mid October..................
    [IMG]

    But in the end the winner had to be Lobelia tupa......................
    [IMG]

    The tallest flower spike is about three metres now. But this one plant could have been even better as half of it got flattened in the winds that we had earlier this summer. Here's a shot of it before flowering.................
    [IMG]

    That is just one plant! And one that is thought to be borderline hardy to boot.

    So what were your best plants this year?

        Gorgeous specimens there, longk :thumbsup:
        Any that endured and survived being dug up, potted and relocated to my new home!
        Probably pretty boring by more experienced gardeners point of view, but still an achievement for me (never had to transplant things to a completely new home before):-
        ~ Thuja occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon'
        ~ Pittosporumtenuifolium 'Warnham Gold'
        ~ two honeysuckle cuttings
        ~ several hydrangea cuttings
        ~ Fatsia Japoncia
        ~ Corylus avellana Contorta
        ~ Amelanchier
        These were the ones I really didn't want to leave behind and that's what makes them my best plants this year: they forgave me :heehee:

          They also represent your own work too. Apart from the Salvia discolor which I cannot propagate for toffee all mine were seed grown or raised from cuttings.

            Hmm, dhalias were probably the best this year for enjoyment. Cucamelon purely for growth...
            Cannas and musa bajoo also did well

                Mine would be one of these three, but I think you have seen them all before.
                This Brug

                And the H. garnerianum in flower the same time as the bougainvillea.

                  They're worth seeing again!

                  Two questions;
                  What is the plant behind the Brug (I can see the caudex but not the rest of the plant).
                  What is the plant in bud in the second photo. It's on the left of the photo about a third of the way up.

                  The plant behind the brug is one of a pair of Beaucarnea recurvata that I have, need potting on badly and possibly a good home with better winter protection facilities,

                  I think the flower bud you refer to might be the dead flower on the Protea cynaroides?

                    And the crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) was quite good in the end this year.

                      Salvia Hotlips has been exceptional this Summer.
                      Still one of my favourite plants even though is 'bedding' Sunsatia (Nemesia) Mango has flowered for 5 months each flower has five colours and is now 2ft high. Not readily available so I took cuttings and have four young plants for next year.

                        Keep finding them now.
                        Podranea ricasoliana must get a mention.
