What are the growths emerging from the base of my Yuccas? First instinct was to regard them as 'pups', but as there's been no leaf burst for a couple of years I fear that they may be roots trying to escape a too-small pot.

Yuccas radial roots are shallow, and can spread to over 30ft from the trunk, and being a plant from dry areas, they basically store liquid in their roots for dryer times, I would say you are correct, it is time to pot this plant on.

I agree roots, but never seen one put out roots that thick that haven't gone on to produce new pups.
Is that Y. filamentosa or more likely Y. flccidia.

It looks like one of the low shrubby types rather than the more tree like ones.

If so it would benefit from being planted in the ground.

Thanks fellas. Can't say what variety it is as - along with a couple of other similarly affected varieties - it was rescued from a deceased's garden.
