Gardening for less able people - the benefits of an artificial lawn

The UK in summertime can be glorious, and suburban homeowners up and down the country take pride in their colourful, neat and welcoming gardens.

However, even the most well-tended lawn can get out of control quickly in a climate that is alternately sunny, warm and wet, and for those with mobility issues, bad backs or other joint pain, keeping a natural lawn under control can prove difficult, especially if living alone.

The alternative of a paved courtyard can be practical from a maintenance point of view - but for people living with physical pain or other disability, even walking on hard surfaces can jar the knees - and there’s always the danger of a fall.

So for many, the invention of synthetic grass is a major leap forward in being able to enjoy a soft, green garden with no physical exertion.

The development of materials such as polyethylene ensures a lawn that is fit for purpose, from a leisure range for larger areas enjoyed by families and pets, to luxury ranges giving the illustrious feel of an outdoor carpet: A garden space that stays lush all year round with no maintenance will not only be practical but bring much pleasure emotionally, which in itself makes living with any condition more bearable.

There are also financial benefits to installing an artificial lawn. After the initial outlay, that’s it - there are no ongoing maintenance costs. But water and electricity bills will be reduced: No watering; no mowing. The savings could be spent on treatments for a better quality of life.

The benefits in a nutshell

  • No mowing, cutting, weeding, watering or spraying

  • No mud

  • No brown patches

  • Hardwearing - as good as new, years later

  • Non toxic materials - child and pet safe

  • Quick drainage

  • For extra peace of mind, a shock pad underlay is available in case of tumbles.
There is a greater understanding of many conditions now - mental as well as physical - and health care professionals and carers strive to ensure quality of life for their patients and loved ones.

With studies continuing to show that emotional and physical well being are intrinsically linked, there is now a real and affordable alternative to paving a garden, which will leave the mobility challenged homeowner with a far more pleasant place in which to spend those warm, sunny days.
