Generally I tidy up anything that's gone black and mushy, but leave those things holding their shape. Might be a change this year, being so mild, and I'll take down the Acanthus senni, Dahlia imperialis and the Impatiens tinctoria after Christmas to give some of the spring growers a chance.

Light pollution is a growing problem; it upsets nocturnal creatures and makes terrestrial astronomy difficult especially from back gardens.

I have tulips through the compost in the greenhouse and the garden. Spring bulbs start to grow earlier than many realise; snowdrops and crocuses start to develop roots and shoots in late summer and daffodils soon after.

Whatever we think about the English language it is often the first choice of those wishing to learn a 2nd language. We used to host students from various countries who attended the local college to learn English. The evening meal was the time everyone got together resulting in an extra lesson...
