Suggestions for the Christmas present from hell as far as I’m concerned
You could always dig a huge hole in your garden, fill it with water and stick that contraption on top! Then you'd have a proper well!!And if your "friend" calls round you could chuck them down...

Agree with @Michael Hewett that it looks like a root problem. Vine weevil would probably have been very visible when you took it out but there are other, small root pests that could be the case....
