Agree with @Michael Hewett that it looks like a root problem. Vine weevil would probably have been very visible when you took it out but there are other, small root pests that could be the case....

Recommend a small-ish evergreen shrub that is nice to sit with

Supporting a plant in a plant pot container
Cut three or four appropriately sized sections off a bamboo cane and wedge them horizontally between the inner and outer pot. Should aid stability and allow humidity to rise.
