    How about putting it somewhere that is very visible to them but not constantly in your line of site and planting a few fake vines over the edges of the thing to make it look like they are growing...

    Last year I had a load of small chillies that I left on the shelf over a radiator and forgot about for several months. They dried out beautifully.

    I seem to get a reasonable crop off of the ones I missed the year before, just makes me wonder if the drying out through the winter is not the best of things for a seed potato tuber.
