Cutting right down seems to be the sensible thing since leaving it alone isn't an option. They might find it sprouts again or they get suckers coming up around the trunk. But 5ft would just look silly.

Basically that is how it should work, if someone is not on the same page as you, just ignore them, admittedly its not always easy, but I bet a fair few of us have written the odd post and then deleted it without posting after that second thought.

@hailbopp Aaah now I see the full glory (hideousness... if that's a word). I agree cut off the uprights put hinges on the roof and make some sort of storage box out of it. A dark stain so it "dissappears" into the background.

I've gone with sealed, pre-baited boxes for the safety of the dogs, so won't be able to do that. I was tempted to fill the holes in, but then wondered if all I would do is remove their exit...
