Rose Gauntlet
I (female though with medium hands) got Wilko gauntlets which were excellent against thorns and not too big. Range have taken over the Wilko brand, so might stock them

Italian Pencil Cypress - planting next to house
I personally don't believe they have a long term future in containers, but agree planting in that position isn't a good idea. I think some trellis on the wall with a suitable climbing plant...

@Love my chicken my ladybird looks like a harlequin. It has two white patches at the front. We have so many in the house at times and they are all sorts of colours and spots.
