It's been very wet and there is no path currently so the dog made his own. I don't want a path straight down the middle because it will make two even longer thinner rectangles and make the garden even more narrow looking.

The variegated Pittosporum Elizabeth could work well - one of my neighbours has a very attractive hedge of this. I liked @Plantminded's suggestion of a flowering climber for the arch itself, too.
