I've grown both the yellow and the red but can't remember the actual names. I think the yellow tend to be more vigorous than the red but as with every plant these days, new varieties are produced on a seemingly continuous basis.

And where do you plug that in?I've got a combination microwave which has a grill setting but never used that setting, just bung cheese on toast under the gas grill on the cooker. I'm surprised people actually clean stuff that gets up to nuclear temperatures every time you use them.

It's basically just a small gap, not a moat. I keep maybe a hand's width clear around the base of anything woody and mulch right up to that. Once they're properly established and the bark's thickened up it matters less, but for anything newly planted it's worth being careful.

Our allotment neighbour grew them last year, they never actually paid for the plot and we're kicked off and when the new couple took over I explained they had a lovely crop of mangelwurzels to look forward to and I received a very blank expression in return. The ones the lady had planted look...

Queen of the Night seems to be the consensus here. I've got a few red ones that keep coming back year after year but honestly couldn't tell you what variety they are anymore, the labels vanished ages ago. The red ones always seem the most stubborn about returning which suits me fine.
