Trees, particularly young trees, generally prefer not to have anything in touch with the trunk (other than air). I always leave a gap around the trunk when I'm mulching around a tree, no matter what i'm mulching with - it's like a doughnut with a hole in the middle...

Do you have opera glasses or binoculars? You could see if there are buds starting to open. I wouldn’t necessarily expect leaves but Catkins. But I’m not an expert in this. I checked my images when I took a picture of a willow and this had male Catkins at the end of March.

I thought most pressure cookers used weights, to hold the pressure, the one we had years ago did, so if the pressure got too high the weights just lifted and let the steam out.

I'm not surprised you getting 10 different answers, there's not a lot to go by at the moment until it gets some leaves at least.The growth habit looks similar to Hibiscus but that is just a wild guess.

We're in Ile de France, so quite far North. The soil in our garden has many earthworms in it - I'm hoping that's a good sign!

Are they not still in the process, these old buildings need constant attention, a bit like cathedrals and stately homes. Problems occur when they stop the constant upkeep and then it cost millions to get them back.

Not found anyone local, they only do topsoil and mushroom compost and aggregates, the delivery charges always makes it more expensive than the GC bags in the end unless local, plus you dont really have any idea what you will get, a ton of something pretty awful is not good. I could try a pallet...

It survives around here is all I can say, dont have it myself but have seen it in gardens.

Don't forget to water them in and they will need watering over the summer.
