It looks like it. Lift up the pots and carefully look around the base and under the rim for slugs and snails. You can use slug pellets. These are now based on ferrous sulphate and don't harm birds, hedgehogs etc.

Unfortunately I don't have any other materials in the garden to use, and there is quite a large area to cover so I fear putting in a drystone wall would be beyond my level of skill.

Thanks regarding the dog violets as well, I have loads of them in the back garden. They seem to really love it there in the shady places and also edges of the lawn

I've just seen compost for sale in Lidl at £3.49 for 40l. That's cheap enough that even if it's poor, it's a starting point

It survives around here is all I can say, dont have it myself but have seen it in gardens.

I remove the spray gun after every use and keep it inside. The hose itself is fastened on the sheltered back wall of the house.

Queen of the Night seems to be the consensus here. I've got a few red ones that keep coming back year after year but honestly couldn't tell you what variety they are anymore, the labels vanished ages ago. The red ones always seem the most stubborn about returning which suits me fine.

Well done all worth it in the end no time to rest its spring well occasionally
