Plant a few else where in case a couple die after planting and you can replace them.

It didn't strike me that way at all. Just someone asking for advice, concerned about doing the wrong thing for their plants. In my book that is being sensitive to a plant's needs.

Yes it is. When we 're working in our veg plot we have to rescue worms before the chooks get them. Not always succesful.If you add Ile de France to your profile, people will be better able to tailor advice - climate and soil make a huge difference to what grows well.

Unfortunately I don't have any other materials in the garden to use, and there is quite a large area to cover so I fear putting in a drystone wall would be beyond my level of skill.

Thanks regarding the dog violets as well, I have loads of them in the back garden. They seem to really love it there in the shady places and also edges of the lawn

It survives around here is all I can say, dont have it myself but have seen it in gardens.

I always take mine in during winter. I'm sure the hose itself would be fine but in the past I've lost several spray guns (both Hozelock & B&Q's own brand) when they've frozen and then burst, so now I don't risk it.
