@Obelix-Vendée there doesn't seem to be any reason established as to their demise or inability to breed. The Guillemots population there does get hammered by Raven predation.

Supposedly edible but I've never tried them. Pretty hardy here in London, the two that I see regularly have remained in leaf this winter.

I like the moat method for seedlings I sow in the greenhouse and it works well (I put the legs of the stand in water so I have more room) but you do get intrepid slugs that scale the greenhouse...
