I dont see this as something you are going to sort out in one fell swoop, unless you just rip everything out along that fence, do you want a border along the fence? If not then as you say grass right up to the fence will just mean you only have the fence between you and the neighbors, nothing...

I used to have a Sumac tree in a previous garden. I did actually like it but it certainly likes to travel !! Not ideal for the average garden but makes an impressive roadside avenue.

My neighbour has wind chimes in the back garden - we don't hear them unless we are out there and usually as far up the garden as the greenhouse.. .something quite nice about hearing them tinkle away whilst pottering in the greenhouse.

I tend to use a fork for most things other than digging holes.That fence looks pretty substantial to me, I cant think a small shrub like that will be causing damage, and if it was a bit of puning could easily fix the problem.

They seem interesting creatures and watching them over the nest building, mating, hatching and feeding periods would be rewarding. I wonder if they steal from each other and is infedelity a issue. Winter storms would seem very likely regarding nest removal.
